About St Matthews Pre School

Established in 1989, our childcare facility is conveniently located within the grounds of Stretton St Matthew's Primary School, offering easy access and ample parking for parents. Situated in St Matthew's Church Hall, we provide a safe and enclosed external play area with outdoor equipment for children's enjoyment.

Each day, our main hall transforms with a variety of engaging activities, including arts and crafts, messy play, role-play, and a quiet space for reading, ensuring a dynamic learning environment.

We take great pride in our strong partnerships with Stretton St Matthew's Primary School and St Matthew's Church, fostering a sense of community. Regular visits to both the school and church further enhance this connection, and we also arrange visits for school leavers to meet their new teachers and explore their future classrooms.

As a registered charity, we operate under the Early Years Learning Alliance 2011 constitution, and are managed by a committee of dedicated parents. Our commitment to quality childcare is recognised by our "Outstanding" rating from OFSTED in February 2019. Parents are welcome to review our current OFSTED report and annual charity commission report through the links below.

Our Curriculum

At St Matthew’s Pre School, we provide a nurturing, creative environment that encourages every child to learn, grow, and thrive. Our curriculum is based on the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework and guided by Development Matters, ensuring children develop holistically across the seven areas of learning: communication, physical and emotional development, literacy, mathematics, understanding the world, and expressive arts.

We focus on key school readiness skills, helping children gain independence in self-care, develop early literacy and numeracy abilities, build social confidence, and show awareness of phonics. Our progression-based approach ensures activities are tailored to each child’s age and developmental stage, with careful scaffolding that prepares them for their next steps in learning.

At St Matthew’s, we also promote British Values and celebrate the rich diversity of our community. Children participate in democratic activities like voting for books of the day and contributing to school rules, while parents and community members enrich our curriculum through visits and sharing their expertise. We encourage parents to be involved in their child’s learning, sharing their cultural traditions and helping us create an inclusive, supportive environment.

Our goal is to provide a well-rounded, holistic education that prepares every child for a successful transition to primary school, nurturing a love of learning and building a strong foundation for the future.
